A publication detailing the artistic journey and creative process of visual artist Allie van Altena in the form of a folding sheet. For Allie, the process is as significant as the final result, so we poetically portrayed his studio and process: when the monochrome sheet is unfolded, the material he works with reveals itself in vibrant colour, as an invitation to delve into his artistic world.
Inspired by the folding sheet, a DVD followed. Unfolding its cover simulates the turning of the sheets. In the video, everything converges: the materials, the creative process, the turning of the sheets and the work in colour, portraying a seamless, continuous journey.
Another project we designed for Allie was a leporello featuring his series of drawings “Antibodies”, reflecting on the lockdown period when reality seemed replaced by another reality. The white skeleton represents the poet and dreamer, while the black skeleton represents the vision or thought. The viewer can interpret whether reality has become a dream or a nightmare.
The leporello displays alternating white and black drawings on one side, with on the other side the sentence:
“THE POET WILL SEE CLEARLY THAT THERE IS A CLOUD IN EVERY SHEET OF PAPER. WITHOUT CLOUDS THERE IS NO SILVER LINING. AND THAT’S HOW DREAMS COME IN.”
The beginning and end of the leporello can be attached by two magnets, creating an infinite carousel.
“Attention, expertise, and creativity combined with direct communication make collaborating with Eyal & Myrthe a celebration. In addition to their very clear visual language, I have been admiring their openness and patience for over 15 years. By thinking along and empathizing, they make the assignments ‘personal’. I hope for at least another 15 years of unique collaboration.”
